GEORGIAN, DURHAM HOSTS OCAA MEN'S RUGBY MEDAL MATCHES

TORONTO - The 2023 fall championship season in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) concludes this weekend with the awarding of medals in men's rugby.

On Saturday, the Durham Lords host the St. Lawrence Surge in the OCAA bronze medal match in a battle of East Division teams. Durham won the division with a 5-0 record but was upset by the Humber Hawks in last Sunday's semi-final.

In their only meeting during the regular season, the Lords shut out the Surge 17-0 on Oct. 21. Despite losing, St. Lawrence kept Durham to its lowest point total of the season. Overall, the Surge are 4-3.

Statistically, Durham's Tyler Janes (Pickering) led the entire OCAA with 57 regular season points on three tries, five converts and four penalty kicks. Jack Hay (Bath) led St. Lawrence in scoring, kicking eight converts and two penalty kicks for 22 points.

The marquee match-up has Humber visiting the Georgian Grizzlies on Sunday in the OCAA gold medal match.

Humber ended Durham's undefeated season last Sunday, winning in overtime 23-20, while the Grizzlies have advanced to their fifth consecutive OCAA final. Georgian has lost the four previous gold medal matches, as the Grizzlies look to break this sequence with a victory.

Georgian won the West Division with a 4-1 record, which included a 26-22 win over Humber on Oct. 14. Ethan Murray (Barrie) scored a couple of tries in the victory, while Daniel Budic (Mississauga) scored a try and booted a convert in a losing effort.

The Grizzlies last won the OCAA championship in 2016 while the Hawks last lifted the plaque in 2014.
