FLEMING REPEAT AS OCAA WOMEN'S RUGBY CHAMPIONS

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Fleming Knights successfully defended their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's rugby championship on account of a 41-10 victory over St. Lawrence-Kingston in the gold medal match.

The OCAA Women's Rugby Championship presented by belairdirect took place at Fleming College's Sutherland Campus in Peterborough, Ont.

Fleming had an unblemished regular season record, including two previous wins over St. Lawrence by an average margin of 28.5.

Second-year player Jacinta Addai-Sarfo (Bradford) led the Knights with a gold medal match-high four tries totaling 20 points. Three other Knights scored one try each, including Jillian Hartung (Peterborough), Annie Nelson (Brampton) and Alize Spalding-Lawrence (Hamilton). Joanna Bronson (Peterborough) chipped in with three converts in the victory.

Third-year player Samantha Gourdier (Amherstview) accounted for half of St. Lawrence's points with a try. Third-year player Amanda Blair (Trenton) accounted for the other half with a convert and penalty kick.

Addai-Sarfo was named Player of the Game for Fleming, while Becky Hill (Sydenham) received the same honour for St. Lawrence.

Fleming was awarded an OCAA medal for a fourth-straight season with two gold and two bronze. Despite the loss, it was St. Lawrence's best finish in women's rugby, earning silver after a bronze medal last season.

Fleming advanced to the OCAA Gold Medal Match as a result of finishing in first place in the regular season standings. St. Lawrence had to win its way into the match, defeating Algonquin 15-10 on Oct 29.

St. Lawrence had tries from Blair and first-year teammates Kelsie Minnie (Trenton) and Lilly Dickson (Joyceville) in the victory. First-year player Devon Whiteside (Alliston) and second-year player Kristin Waterman (Dartsmouth, N.S.) scored for Algonquin, who was awarded the OCAA bronze medal.
