HAWKS THREE-PEAT AT OCAA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

HAWKS THREE-PEAT AT OCAA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

KING CITY, Ont. - The Humber Hawks captured the OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship for the third straight season, defeating the Seneca Sting in four sets 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22.

The Seneca Sting jumped on the Hawks early, feeding off the boisterous crowd in the King Gym. Despite the early lead by the Sting, the experienced Hawks battled back from an 18-12 deficit to tie 23-23, but the Sting were able to take the opening set.

The Hawks regrouped between sets and jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set. The back-and-forth match saw the Sting score seven consecutive points to tie the set 8-8. A Hawks timeout settled the team as the offence began to find their rhythm thanks to OCAA West Division Player of the Year Erika Dodd.

The Hawks took a 2-1 sets lead and led the Sting midway through the fourth set, but the Sting once again kept battling back. Unfortunately for the host Sting, the Hawks had an answer and were able to capture their fourteenth championship in 17 years.

Dodd led the Hawks with 14 kills and added 10 digs. Te-Anna Stephenson added 11 kills and Reese Cholette led the defensive effort with 23 digs.

Ara Telan topped the Sting with 20 kills in addition to 11 digs. Franz Largadas added 13 kills and 15 digs.

Dodd was named Player of the Match for the Hawks while Telan was named Played of the Match for the Sting.

Dodd was named Most Valuable Player of the championship while Stephenson and Kennedy Williscroft were named All-Stars for the Hawks. Emily Coughlan and Largadas were named All-Stars for the Sting.

BRONZE MEDAL

The Loyalist Lancers made history, capturing their first OCAA medal (bronze) in women's volleyball with a four-set victory over the Durham Lords 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19.

Looking to capture a medal for the third straight year, the Lords came out swinging in the first set. The energetic Lords took the opening set behind the dual-attack of Chelsea Oke and Chanel Ethier.

The Lancers responded in the second set and continued to get stronger as the match progressed. The tandem of Allyson Terwillegar (hitting) and Georgi Williams (setting) was too much for the Lords as the Lancers left with the bronze medals.

Sierra Scott was named Player of the Match for the Lancers, finishing with 10 kills and 17 digs. Ethier was named Player of the Match for the Lords following an 11-kill, six-dig performance.

Erika Robertson was named a Championship All-Star for the Lancers and was joined by Amanda Larsen from the Lords.
