ALGONQUIN KNOCKS OUT ST. CLAIR TO GET INTO OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CONSOLATION FINAL

Day two action at the OCAA Women's Basketball Championship is opened with the first of two consolation games.  The East represented by Algonquin Thunder faced off against the West team St.Clair Saints.  The Thunder keep their season alive with a 55-43 victory.

Algonquin came out strong taking a fast five point lead to go up 6-1 early in the first quarter. OCAA West Second team all-star Torrie Handsor of the Saints kept her team in the quarter with 3 points.  While Player of the Game for the Thunder, Gathoth Nya put up 2 baskets of her own to give the Thunder a one point lead, 11-10 to go into the second quarter. 

Both teams came out strong in the second quarter exchanging a couple fast break baskets.  The Player of the Game for the Saints, Nicole Tamm led her team with 2 baskets.  While 2nd year Jeylinh Bui contributed 5 points towards the Thunders total.  The Saints kept close with the Thunder trailing by only one point going into half time, 25-24.

The Thunder's high energy defense shut down the Saints in the third quarter, limiting them to only 9 points and taking control of the game.  Gathoth showing why she deserved the Player of the Game put up 4 points for the Thunder. While All Rookie Team, Aleah Marton scored 3 points to spark some life in the Saints.  The Thunder pulled ahead by 8 leading 41-33 at the end of the third quarter.

Seeing the consolation finals in reach the Thunder came out with all cylinders firing in the fourth quarter.  2nd year Lauren Tembrake scored 5 of her 7 points for the Thunder in the fourth quarter. While Marton sank the Saints only 3 of the game.  The Thunder faught of a late quarter run by the Saints to take the game 54-43.

Marton and Tamm lead the Saints with 10 points and 7 rebounds each.  While 1st year Shianna Riggan had a great defensive game contributing 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

The Thunder were lead by Bui with 12 points and 9 rebounds.  Basquin put up 9 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals of her own.  Gathoth contributed 8 points and 1 steal to Algonquins victory.
