Knights Complete Double Sweep of Golden Shield and Vipers on Seniors Weekend

February 17, 2020…WELLAND – The Niagara College Knights men's volleyball team closed our their regular season with two easy wins over Cambrian College and Boreal College over the weekend.

Saturday night's match saw the Knights overpower the struggling Golden Shied in a quick three sets (25-8, 25-10, 25-23).

"We wanted to make sure that we continued our momentum and good habits that we've been working on over the past couple weeks and I think we did a good job of that," said head coach Tommy Sloan. "With our playoff picture essentially set, we were able to rest a few guys and get some playing experience for some players that haven't had as many opportunities this season. It was a good test of our team's ability to communicate and generate our own energy and we were fairly successful at that"

Sunday's senior's day saw the Knights pick up where they left off the night before, downing the Boreal Vipers 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-18).

The Knights were led by two of their three graduating players over the weekend, with Elijah Bugiardini finished the weekend with a combined 35 points, while Sam Otten added 18 against the Vipers.

Mitchell Sawatsky was also recognized as a graduating athlete, who spent four years as a Niagara Knight.

"We got great performances from all of our seniors including both Eli Bugiardini and Sam Otten surpassing 240 points on the season. We feel good about entering the crossover weekend healthy and on a bit of a winning streak," said Sloan.

With the Knights two weekend wins, Niagara finished third in the OCAA West at 12-6, and will host an OCAA Championship qualifier against George Brown on Saturday. The Huskies finished 6th in the OCAA East Division with a 9-9 record.
