Knights Fall in 3-1 Decision to Undefeated Hawks

March 3rd, 2022 - The Niagara Knights men's volleyball team fell 1-3 to the powerful 7-0 Humber Hawks last night at the Welland Campus Centre. Set scores were 15-25,19-25,25-23,24-26.

The Knights were in tough coming up against the undefeated Hawks who not only remain undefeated this season, but remain unbeaten in thier last 27 OCAA regular season games.

The opening two sets were dominated by Humber, with seven different players recording at least one point on the stats sheet. Humber jumped up to a 0-2 lead and looked to close in the third to complete the sweep.

Niagara, however, wasn't ready to lay down just yet. Fans were treated to a terrific third set of volleyball where midway through the set the Hawks and Knights found themselves tied up at 16. Both teams traded point for point right up until the end before Niagara sealed the deal with a service ace from Colin Prelaz to steal the 25-23 win from the Hawks and stay alive for a fourth set.

Set four proved to be just as thrilling again with both teams trading point for point. Everything remained all tied up at 20-20 before a 4-1 run would put Humber in position to close the deal. The Knights battled back to tie things up again before Humber had a big kill and service ace to shut down the Knights and take the 24-26 win and win the match 1-3.

Colin Prelaz led the Knights with 13 points (9 kills, 7 digs) followed by Dallas Melnick (6 kills, 10 digs) and Ashton Nieuwets (8 kills, 8 digs).

The Knights tough schedule continues this week when they close out their regular season at home against the 6-1 Redeemer Royals. The OCAA playoff picture will be set after regular season play this weekend, with quarter-final match-up's set to start Thursday March 10th.
