Lady Lions Slayed Twice In Weekend Contests

SARNIA,ON - With games against two of their toughest opponents of the young season, the Lady Lions Basketball team(2-4) came up short. With the Niagara Knights(5-2) and Mohawk Mountaineers(5-1) in town, Lambton battled hard but were unable to withstand the high-powered offences.

In Friday's contest, Niagara controlled the contest straight from the opening tip. Early foul trouble for the Lions sent the Knights to the line and they converted over 70%, building an early lead. A stronger 2nd quarter for the Lions kept them close but timely 3-point shooting from the Knights built their lead back up going into the half. The 2nd half had the Lions doing all they could defensively, contesting nearly every shot the Knights took. However Niagara was able to grab multiple offensive rebounds leading to a big advantage in second-chance points, sinking the Lions by a score of 89-51.

Madisyn Campbell again was the leading scorer for Lambton with 13 points, while also collecting 7 rebounds. Lauren VanLeerzam notched 10 points and with 8 boards while Christine Fleischer had 8 points and 11 rebounds. Rounding out the scoring for Lambton was Lindsay Graham with 7, Kelsey Hood with 5, Maddi Basso with 4, Sarah Goodman with 3 and Morgan Campbell with 1.

On Saturday, the Lady Lions played one of their strongest games against arguably their toughest opponent yet, but ultimately fell 78-52. The Lions moved the ball well all contest, leading to open looks against a strong defensive unit from Mohawk. Strong foul shooting from Mohawk proved to be the early difference maker, as they outscored Lambton from the charity stripe 18-4. Lambton stuck with the Mountaineeers through the 3rd quarter, trailing by just 11 before running out of gas in the 4th. A big run by Mohawk put the game away as they held on for their 5th victory of the season.

Madisyn Campbell finished with 14 points, with Christine Fleischer close behind with 13. Lion scorers also included Kelsey Hood with 8, Lindsay Graham with 5, Lauren VanLeerzam and Valerie Gotelaer with 4 each, and Sarah Goodman and Maddi Basso with 2 each.

Lambton travels to Toronto this weekend to face the Humber Hawks and Sheridan Bruins.
