Game Preview: Mountaineers ride momentum into Humber

Following a weekend that saw Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball play some of its best volleyball of the season, the team heads into Humber to play the undefeated Hawks on Thursday night.

The game will appear on OCAA Live at 6 p.m.

The Matchup:

Mohawk enters the match with a 7-6 record and tied for fifth in the OCAA West. Meanwhile Humber is currently undefeated at 12-0 and are ranked second in the CCAA.

The Mountaineers will need to play as they did last week when they swept the Boreal Vipers and pulled out a five-set win over the Cambrian Golden Shield. It was some of the best volleyball of the season for the women, led by Rachel Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON) and Irene Jaramillo (Manizales, CO)

What Happened Last Time:

When these two last met on Nov. 16, Mohawk was in the midst of a season-long six game losing streak. The Hawks won the match 3-0 (14-25, 13-25, 21-25).

Despite the match only going three sets, Anika Gatto (Coquitlam, BC) still had 15 digs for the Mountaineers.

Humber's Stephanie Armstrong played well, spreading the ball around for 29 assists.

Who to Watch For:

Vanderwal becomes to player to watch for on Mohawk after being named both Mountaineer Athlete of the Week and OCAA Star of the Week following a career performance against the Golden Shield. The second-year now has 24 kills over the last two games.

Humber's balanced attack makes it difficult to spotlight an individual that Mohawk will need to contain. The Hawks strong offense has been led by Keyome Ellis, who leads the OCAA with a .427 kill percentage.

What's Next:

The Mountaineers return to the DBARC on Jan. 28, hosting the Sheridan Bruins at 1 p.m.
