Lambton opens season at 0-2-1

@ Mohawk Mountaineers

In their season opening game, the Lady Lions battled through the elements against a tough Mohawk team to eventually fall 2-0. With the team less then a week removed from tryouts and trying their best to find chemistry with their new teammates, Lambton fell behind with two early tallies from the Mountaineers. As the rain poured from the sky, the Lady Lions were able to settle down going into the half to keep the game at 2-0.

The 2nd half proved to be a much better example of what Lambton is capable of, as captain Chelsea Wagner and rookie transfer Taryn Bernier put the team on their backs, keeping the ball in the Mohawk end. The Lady Lions created several magnificent scoring chances, putting the Mountaineer defense on their heels, but were turned aside from a stellar goaltending performance by the Mohawk keeper.

@ St. Clair Saints

The Lambton College Lady Lions traveled to Windsor on Tuesday to take on the Saints in their home opener. It was a tightly contested affair, ending in a 1-1 draw. The Lady Lions started the game strong, creating several exceptional scoring opportunities. They final broke through in the 12th minute, as Taryn Bernier found Kayla McQueen who rifled one into the back of the net. The Saints pressed hard in the final minutes of the first half, but were stifled by keeper Mackenzie Colbran to keep the Lady Lions ahead at the break.

The second half started out just as how the first half ended, with St. Clair pressuring the Lambton defenders. The Lady Lions were able to keep the Saints at bay for most of the second half until a costly turnover deep in their own end in the 78th minute. St. Clair was able to capitalize on the mistake and knotted the game at 1. The Saints kept the pressure up for the remainder of the game but Lambton's defense was stellar, turning away multiple chances to come away with the draw.

VS Redeemer Royals

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the Lady Lions dropped their home opener against the Redeemer Royals by a score of 2-1. The slick conditions proved a tough task for both teams as ball control was extremely difficult and momentum was hard to come by. Redeemer opened the scoring midway through the first half when a collision in the 18-yard box gave the Royals a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Colbran guessed right, but it was just out of her reach to put the Royals up 1-0. The Lady Lions created multiple scoring opportunities, but the slick conditions kept the ball bouncing just out of reach of the Lambton forwards.

In the 2nd half, Lambton came out of the gates pressuring hard, keeping the ball in the Redeemer end. They moved the ball well and kept throwing the ball on net, getting big rebounds from the Royals goalkeeper in the wet conditions. Maria Vani jumped on one of those rebounds, made a move and pounded the equalizer into the open net. The game stayed at 1-1 until Redeemer threw a ball at new goalkeeper Christine Fleischer, who attempted to roll the ball to a nearby defender but had her pass intercepted by a Redeemer forward, who proceeded to chip in the go-ahead tally.

The Lady Lions will look to get into the win column this week as they travel to Fanshawe on Wednesday before hosting Mohawk this Saturday at 1pm. Good Luck Lambton!
