Women’s Basketball Split in GTA

Toronto, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team defeated Sheridan College in Brampton Saturday evening by a score of 53-50 but fell 66-58 to Humber College in Etobicoke Sunday afternoon earning a weekend split in their GTA road trip.  The Lady Saints remain in 3rd Place with a 6-2 record in the OCAA's West Division.

In Saturday's victory over Sheridan the Saints were able to get ahead 13-10 after the opening quarter on their way to enjoying their largest lead of twelve points midway through the second quarter.  St. Clair's 28-18 advantage at the half shrunk in the third quarter to just a basket (36-34) entering the final quarter before Sheridan overtook the Saints with about 8 minutes to play.  Sheridan went ahead by 8 points with about 5 minutes to play in the game before St. Clair righted the ship and were clutch down the stretch from the free throw line.  The Saints offset a poor shooting night (25%) and rebounding deficit (-10) by capitalizing on 23 Sheridan turnovers while converting 85% from the charity stripe.

Saints 3rd year guard Logan Kucera (Chatham, ON) scored a game high 15 points adding 6 rebounds and 2 assists.  Sister Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) also reached double figures with 11 points to go with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and a theft.  Noor Bazzi (Windsor, ON/Vincent Massey) chipped in with 9 points and 6 rebounds while Keirsten Tomkins (Sarnia, ON) cleared 9 boards with 5 points and 6 steals.

In Sunday's loss St. Clair was only ahead after the opening basket but spent the remainder of the game trying to catch up to Humber.  Down 19-13 after the first quarter and 31-25 at the half the Saints struggled in the third and were down 55-37 early in the fourth.  St. Clair battled down the stretch and were within striking distance (60-56) with 1:50 remaining but could come no closer.  Humber held the advantage in rebounding (63-46) and bench scoring (28-1).  St. Clair did force 30 Humber turnovers but unfortunately only converted that into 9 points.

Logan Kucera scored 23 points to lead the Saints followed closely by sister Jana who recorded 20 of her own while both had 7 rebounds.  Bazzi was a point shy of a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds to go with a pair of blocked shots.  Tomkins cleared another 11 boards and chipped in with 5 points.

The St. Clair Women's Basketball team come home for a pair of games this weekend hosting Redeemer University College (Ancaster) on Friday and complete their first half schedule with a tilt against Conestoga College (Kitchener) on Saturday.
