Mountaineers nearly edge No. 2 Hawks

Mountaineers nearly edge No. 2 Hawks

By: Julian Orlando

Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball nearly handed the No. 2 nationally ranked Humber Hawks their first loss of the season, but came up short in five sets (17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 8-15).

The two sets won by Mohawk ended Humber's streak of 31 consecutive sets won this season.

The match got off to a slow start offensively for the Mountaineers, but strong play at the net and solid defensive coverage helped Mohawk steal set two. It would remain an evenly matched game through set three and four, but the Hawks ultimately took the fifth set.

Mountaineers Athlete of the Week Rachel Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON) set a career-high with seven blocks, and added nine kills. Lexie Zicari (Burlington, ON) led Mohawk with a career-high 13 kills and had 10 digs. Irene Jaramillo (Manizales, CO) was another standout with 11 kills and seven digs.

The Mountaineers return home on Jan. 28 to host the Sheridan Bruins at 1 p.m.
