Women's Softball Split on Day 1 at OCAA’s

Etobicoke, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Softball team opened with a 5-3 win over host Humber College (Etobicoke) at Connorvale Park Friday afternoon at the OCAA Championship but fell 7-4 to Durham College (Oshawa) in the evening.  The loss forces the Saints into another matchup with Humber in a sudden death game.  The winner will advance to the gold medal round and the loser will exit the championship with the bronze medal.

Tied 1-1 with Humber after two innings in the opening game St. Clair used a 3-run third inning to take control and added a run in the fifth for a comfortable lead.  Humber scored two runs in the sixth inning, but the Saints shut them out in the seventh for the win.

Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, ON) had a solid outing on the pitching strip for the win going the distance scattering four hits and four walks but struck out seven Hawks. Amy Claydon (Cambridge, ON) was the difference maker for St. Clair at the plate hitting a double and a homerun that drove in four runs to earn Player of the Game honours.  Sierra Baltzer (LaSalle, ON/Sandwich) had a pair of singles and scored a run for the Saints while providing strong play in the field.

In the Durham loss St. Clair fell behind 2-0 after the first inning and answered with a run in the second.  However, Durham had a 4-run third that was a decisive blow.  St. Clair added two runs in the fifth before they traded runs in the sixth and seventh to complete the scoring.

Mckenna Copley (Dover Centre) took the loss for the Saints working the first three innings giving up four earned runs on seven hits to go with four strikeouts.  Kressler was named Player of the Game for St. Clair after a strong showing at the plate recording two RBI on a triple and a homerun with Claydon contributing two singles.
