Men’s Basketball Advance to OCAA’s

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair College Men's Basketball team (17-3) earned a hard fought 110-95 quarterfinal win over Centennial College (Scarborough) Saturday night at the SportsPlex and advance to the OCAA Provincial Championships which is being hosted by Durham College (Oshawa) next weekend.  The Saints will face George Brown in the semi-finals on Saturday while host Durham meets Humber College (Etobicoke) in the other semi-final with medal play on Sunday.

On Saturday the SportsPlex crowd were treated to a very competitive contest in the early stages as both teams shared the lead several times.  The Saints fought ahead 24-23 after the opening quarter but Centennial came back for a 6-point lead (38-32) midway through the second.  St. Clair used a 17-5 run to close the half thanks in large part to reserve forward Glynn Willis-Paris (Detroit, MI/Kennedy) who hit three triples and propelled his team to a 49-43 halftime advantage.  The Saints seized firm control of the game in the third holding the Colts to just 12 points and went to the fourth up 78-55.  Centennial would not be undone and scored 40 points in the final frame but could not come any closer than 10 points down the stretch.

The Saints got major contributions from their bench resulting in 47 points but were outscored by Centennial who finished with 50 from their reserves.  St. Clair had a 12-2 advantage in offensive rebounding after the first half and by the end of the game led that category 17-10 which proved valuable in creating extra attempts.  Overall rebounds also tipped in favour of St. Clair by a margin of 49-35.  The Saints converted 15 attempts from beyond the arc and shot 48% overall from the field including nearly 40% from 3-point land.

St. Clair's Darnelle Peddie (Pickering, ON) provided lift with a team high 20 points to go with 6 rebounds.  Jesiah Deerr (Whitby, ON) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Saints while adding 5 assists.  Tim Steward (Detroit, MI) came off the bench for 15 points adding 6 rebounds and 6 assists for St. Clair.  Willis-Paris finished with 14 as did Chad Vincent-Simon (Scarborough, ON) for the Saints.  Andrew Loyuk (Windsor, ON/Kennedy) netted 13 points and Galdo Tutu (Windsor, ON/Kennedy) rounded out seven St. Clair players in double figures with 11 points.
