No. 4 Mountaineers back in win column with road victory

The No. 4 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers avoiding losing consecutive games for the first time this season, defeating the Fanshawe Falcons 87-77.

Stefan Anisko (Haldimand County, ON) led all Mohawk scorers with 22 off the bench in a team-high 34 minutes. Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) packed the box scores with 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and six steals. The game saw three other Mountaineers finish in double digit scoring.

Mohawk led after the first quarter, jumping out to a nine-point lead, but Fanshawe answered in the second and the Mountaineers' lead was down to 2 at the half. The game was highly contested down the stretch, but the Mountaineers were able to contain any offensive pressure from the Falcons.

With only five regular season games left for Mohawk, head coach Brian Jonker is still taking a game-by-game approach with OCAA playoffs around the corner.

"We can't take these teams lightly, we don't look at records," said Jonker. "We've won before and we know what it takes, we just have to stay focused and play our game."

Mohawk will rest for a week before getting another tough opponent in the Lambton Lions on Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. inside the DBARC.
