No. 5 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers continued their lights out shooting on their way to a 96-72 win over the Humber Hawks.

It was the fourth game in a row the Mountaineers made at least 16 threes as a team. To begin the second half of the 2022-23 season, Mohawk is shooting 48.5 per cent from three over two games.

Stefan Anisko (Haldimand County, ON) and Daniel Graham (Hamilton, ON) combined for 12 made threes in the win versus the Hawks.

Anisko led all Mountaineer scorers with 26 off the bench and the athletic guard added 8 rebounds as well.

Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) contributed his sixth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points with 11 rebounds. Mercury has been a dominant rebounder all season and is currently fourth in the OCAA in that category.

Graham finished the game with 21 and three other Mountaineers also finished in double digit scoring.

After a high scoring back and forth first quarter, that saw Mohawk lead 35-25 and knock down seven threes, both teams slowed down offensively for the rest of the game. However, the Mountaineers defence would shine, holding the Hawks to seven made field goals combined in the second and third quarters.

"I thought that was probably the most complete game we played all year," said head coach Brian Jonker. "We made some adjustments in the second quarter and I thought we played really."

Mohawk's defence also forced 18 turnovers.

Jonker also praised his team, especially his starters, for their cohesive and unselfish play.

"You can get the Calura brothers and J.J. (Mercury) who can also make shots, but the five of them don't care who gets it and they share the ball which makes it almost impossible to guard,"

The Mountaineers are on the road next to play the Conestoga Condors on Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. Conestoga is the only team to hand Mohawk a loss this season.
