Women’s Basketball 3-0 after Victory at Fanshawe

London, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team earned a tough 57-51 win over Fanshawe College in London Tuesday night moving their West Division leading record to 3-0.  After a successful opening week, the Lady Saints were ranked #2 in the OCAA's first poll but slipped to #8 nationally.

St. Clair had a nice start to the game and led 27-11 after the opening quarter. Quickly expanding their lead to a 10-point spread (21-11) the Saints allowed Fanshawe to tie it up 25-25 shortly before the half.  But the Saints recovered and held a slim 28-27 at the break.  Fanshawe scored the first eight points of the third quarter to overtake St. Clair 33-28, but St. Clair responded with a 17-4 run that put them ahead 45-37 entering the final frame.  The Saints kept the pedal down amassing a 13-point lead (54-51) midway through the fourth quarter.  Fanshawe would not go quietly and cut the lead to just three points with just under a minute to play.  St. Clair converted a 3-pointer on their next possession and were able to run out the clock for the win.

4th year guard Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) had a fine overall game scoring a game high 19 points for St. Clair but filled the stat line with 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals.  Sister Logan Kucera (Chatham, ON) was the only other Saint in double figures scoring 13 points to go with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

A poor shooting night for both teams saw neither convert 30% of their attempts in the contest.  Badly outrebounded (62-45) St. Clair forced 29 Fanshawe turnovers and hit 8 long balls but didn't allow Fanshawe to make any shots from beyond the 3-point arc in the game.

Alison Cotton (London, ON) scored 17 points and added 16 rebounds for Fanshawe in the loss.

The St. Clair Women come home to face Sheridan College (Brampton) on Sunday with a 1:00pm tip time at the SportsPlex.
