ETOBICOKE - On Saturday, it was a breezy, overcast day at Centennial Park as Humber women's soccer (9-0-3) beat Algonquin (7-4-1) 3-1 in its quarter-final matchup. Emma Genova led the way for the Hawks, scoring twice to secure the win for the Hawks.

Match Recap

Both teams started out slowly in this must-win match. The teams spent the first ten minutes feeling each other out, with play staying around midfield. Catarina Medeiros would put the Hawks up one with a crazy strike that sailed just over the keepers' fingers, top shelf. Kassandra Genova would get the assist with a clever drop-pass to set up the goal. Humber would focus on the defensive end of the pitch in this one, not letting the Wolves get any dangerous possessions. Humber would go up 2-0 in the 37th minute as Genova scored her first of the match, deflecting in a free kick. The half would end 2-0 Humber, with the Hawks in full control.

Algonquin came out stronger in the second half, but would continue to be thwarted by the Hawks stingy defence. They would get one back, thanks to a lucky bounce from a free kick all the way from the midfield line. Humber's' confidence wasn't shaken though, as they continued to dominate play. Emma Genova would extend the Hawks lead in the 78th minute, scoring a great goal one-on-one with the keeper. With the Hawks comfortably in the driver's seat, sit back and protect their lead. Algonquin would manage to put together a couple offensive rushes in the late stages of the half, scoring in the 89th minute to cut the Hawks' lead to just one. Humber would lock down defensively, securing the 3-2 victory and a place in the OCAA semi-finals.
