Lions Split to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

Lions Split to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

@ Mohawk Mountaineers

After getting their game cancelled after 7 minutes of play to start the season, the Lamton Lions and Mohawk Mountaineers were able to get their "season opener" underway. After falling earlier in the week 4-0 at home to the Mountaineers, Lambton was looking to bounce back and even the season series.

Mohawk came out firing on all cylinders for this contest, pressuring Lambton's defense corps for most of the game. Lambton was never able to get much going the other way, battling for possession and doing their best to clear the ball from their own end. The score remained at 0-0 going into the half, with the Lions defense still standing strong.

The second half showed some life the other way for the Lions forwards. With Mohawk limiting their chances for most of the game, Lambton was able to push the ball deep into Mohawks end. Captain Andre Fleugel was taken down just outside the 18-yard box at the 63rd minute, setting up a free kick. Alisdair Coy stepped up as placed his free kick under the wall and into the back of the net, handing the Lions a 1-0 lead. Mohawk quickly put the pressure back on Lambton, ringing shot after shot on Zack Moniz but to no avail, as the Lions were able to hold on to the shutout and the 1-0 victory.

@ Redeemer Royals

Heading back to Ancaster to face the Royals on Saturday afternoon and looking to build a winning streak, the Men's soccer team came up just short in a tough 2-1 loss. The first half was played to a stand still with both teams creating multiple scoring opportunities. Lambton dominated early on, moving the ball effectively down the pitch and finding openings in the defense. Unfortunately they weren't able to find the back of the net as the Redeemer keeper made 11 saves in the first half alone to keep the score knotted at zeroes.

The second half opened with a greater defensive effort by the Royals, but still Lambton was able to keep the pressure up and create opportunities. The score would finally be broken by Redeemer, who potted home the opening goal at the 70th minute. Not to be outdone, Lambton immediately came storming back. Fleugel quicky found the equalizer just 2 minutes later thanks to some great ball movement, leading to the open look at the open net which he didn't miss. The Royals would put a damper on the rainy day in the 88th minute, beating Moniz for the 2-1 lead.

The week leaves the Lions at 2-4-0 on the season. Their next action is at home Friday against the Conestoga Condors.
