Women's Basketball Defeated by Falcons in Home Opener

SARNIA, ON - Friday night marked the Home Opener for the Lambton basketball teams as the hosted their 402 rivals, the Fanshawe Falcons(4-1). The Lady Lions (2-2) came into the game hoping to get back to their winning ways after falling in their previous contest, but couldn't withstand the Falcon attack falling 69-43.

Before the game, Lambton Hall of Fame members Kathy Arcuri and Dave Gotts were honoured in a Lambton College 50th Anniversary ceremony. Arcuri was inducted into the HOF in 2009 for her achievements on the basketball court, as she currently sits 2nd on Lambton's All-time scoring list and led the Lions to a Division II championship in 1980-91. Gotts was an integral part of the OCAA for many years, serving as Vice President and chairing multiple committees over his term.

On the hardwood, Fanshawe jumped out on the Lady Lions with heavy defensive pressure, causing multiple turnovers with ill-advised passes. Lambton was eventually able to break the press and get good looks at the basket, but they struggled to find the mesh which allowed the Falcons to build an early lead. The rest of the 1st half proved much of the same as Lambton couldn't put the ball in the basket besides excellent ball movement and open looks.

Lambton got back to playing their game in the 2nd half, converting on their chances and limiting the chances taken by the Falcons. The stronger defensive effort cut the lead down, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit and Fanshawe came away with the 69-43 victory.

Madisyn Campbell continued her strong start to the campaign, dropping 17 points while shooting 50% from 3-point range. Christine Fleischer had 9 points and 6 rebounds, Maddi Basso had 8 points, Lauren VanLeerzam finished with 7 points and 8 rebounds, and Tianna Marshell rounded out the scorig with 2.

The Lions are back in action this week as they host the Niagara Knights Friday at 6:00PM and the Mohawk Mountaineers Saturday at 1:00PM.
