Falcons Drop Two Games in Baseball Season Opener Against George Brown

(London, Ontario) – On Saturday, September 9, the Falcons Baseball team finished 0-2 against the George Brown Huskies in back-to-back games. At Norm Aldridge field, the Huskies won 2-1 in game one and won 21-11 in game two.

 

During the first game of the doubleheader, the Falcons went up 1-0 in the first inning as Jamie Chopping-Lawlor (Cambridge, ON) hit a double, scoring teammate Eric Martyn (Acton, ON). At the top of the second, the Huskies infielder Marcus Herback (Georgetown, ON) hit his first RBI of the season, tying the game up at 1-1.

 

The Falcons played outstanding defense in the third, completing a double play at first and second base. At the top of the fourth, the birds starting pitcher, Shawn Nelson (Walsingham, ON) executed a pickoff against the Huskies. On a wild pitch from the Falcons, Herback crossed home plate putting the Huskies up one over Fanshawe. Game one concluded with a double play which secured the match at a score of 2-1 for the Huskies.

 

The Huskies came out strong during the second game of the doubleheader. Herback ran to home from a single hit by third year Brady Wagenhoffer (Newmarket, ON). A Fanshawe wild pitch and Huskies' single hit furthered George Brown's lead to three after the top of the first inning. The Falcons battled back as Riley Wheeler (Shelburne, ON) smashed his first double of the season and later scored for the Falcons from a Jamie Chopping-Lawlor (Cambridge, ON) RBI. After an eventful second inning, the visitors added four runs to expand the score to 7-1. The Falcons put up a fight in the bottom of the third hitting a double and three singles resulting in three runs from Martyn, Riley Wheeler (Shleburne, ON), and Chopping-Lawlor.

 

The Huskies answered in the fifth adding four runs to their advantage and the home team matched George Brown's four runs in the sixth. Eventually the Huskies took control and won the second game 21-11. Notable players for the Falcons in the second game of the doubleheader was Wheeler and Chopping-Lawlor with three runs. The Birds' designated hitter, Marcus Normandin (Mississauga, ON) had four RBI's.

 

The Falcons look to bounce back as they face the Humber Hawks on Sunday, September 10 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
