Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer overcame an early deficit to beat the St. Clair Saints 3-2 in their season opener.

A season ago, the Mountaineers were on the wrong end of a match versus the Saints, losing 2-1 in the OCAA playoffs.

To begin the 2022 campaign the Mountaineers fell behind 1-0 in the eighth minute, but only a minute later, second-year Janelle Lammers (Frankford, ON) used her strength and nifty moves to put the Mountaineers on the board and tie the game.

Mohawk would end up trailing 2-1 at the end of the first half.

It was in the 68th minute when the Mountaineers would once again equalize the score when first-year Alyssa Glasbergen (Burlington, ON) found the back of the net.

Kimberly Brinker (Welland, ON) would play hero and give Mohawk the winning goal in the 74th minute.

Mountaineers head coach Paull Giannini saw some breakdowns from his team but acknowledged they were limited.

"We had a couple of breakdowns but limited the opponent to very few opportunities," Giannini said. "Second half we changed a few things and the girls reacted well."

The Mountaineers are back in action on Sept. 10 when they play the Lambton Lions in Sarnia, ON for a 2 p.m. match.
