Falcons Fall to the Hawks in Home Opener

On Saturday, September 16, the Fanshawe Falcons Softball team was defeated by the Humber Hawks in a doubleheader at Alumni Field. The visitors won 5-3 in game one and 4-0 in game two.

The Falcons were off to a great start in game one. Getting on the board early, catcher Kailyn Cook (Ingersoll, ON) struck a double and later scored off a single hit by Fanshawe's Marandee Hunter (Chatham, ON). During the third, the Hawks scored their first run of the game. The Falcons answered when Paige Askew (London, ON) crossed home plate from an RBI hit by second-year Jada Doxtator (Southwold, ON).

In the fifth inning, Humber tied things up at 2-2. Both teams went scoreless in the remainder of regulation, sending the game to extra innings. In the eighth, the visitors scored three runs. The Falcons put up a fight as Cook scored her second run of the game, but Fanshawe came up short. The Hawks won game one 5-3.

Game two of the doubleheader began with strong defensive efforts from both teams. Fanshawe's Leah Yantzi (Shakesphere, ON) made a spectacular catch and throw to first base for the double play, keeping the Hawks scoreless in the first two innings.  First-year Yantzi followed up with two double hits in the game, but the Falcons could not convert. The Hawks totaled three runs in the third and fourth innings and took the second game 4-0.

The Falcons are back in action on Sunday, September 17 where they travel to Babcock Field and face the Durham Lords.
