FLEMING PREVAILS IN CONSOLATION CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

 

ETOBICOKE, ON: In a different twist to the Final Eight Championship format, there was a consolation championship game inserted on the final day of competition. On Saturday it was the Fleming Knights who claimed victory by way of a 1-0 shootout win over the first-year University of Toronto - Mississauga Eagles.
Fleming advance to this game by defeating Niagara College, and UTM made a huge statement by knocking off the defending CCAA National champion Sheridan Bruins.
As the game started it was clear to see that the Knights had more control of the ball. The created a couple of opportunities, and came close at the twenty minute mark, but a UTM defender was able aide his Keeper and clear the ball.
Halftime came without any team breaking through. But, just prior to the whistle, in extra time, there was a head to head collision that had UTM player Nolan Anderson helped to the dressing room with a blood related injury.
Play rolled on and still there was no score past the 85th minute, and a shootout was looming.
Early in the shootout both teams traded goals, but as the shootout moved on there were four consecutive misses. Matthew Caguana stepped up and closed out the win for Fleming. 
The Player of the Game for the winning Fleming Knights was Keeper Tyler Delpellaro and Josh Bowman, also a Keeper got the nod for UTM.
