The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team hosted a strong St. Clair Saints team for a doubleheader, losing 16-1 and 11-0.

Both games had the Mountaineers down by four after the first inning and they were never able to rally out of that deficit.

Co-head coach Erin Forman said the coaching staff emphasized fundamentals to their team even when they found themselves down early.

"We need to be focusing on doing things right, no matter what the score is," said Forman.

All three of Mohawk pitchers saw time through both games. Olivia Thompson (Peterborough, ON) provided Mohawk's lone run late in game one.

Saturday's games represented the halfway point of the season in which a Mountaineers team that had expectations of improvement has only been able to win one game of their first twelve played.

Finding consistency from both the offense and defence has been an issue for Mohawk this year.

"We kind of let ourselves down in the first half of the season in that sense," said co-head coach Logan White when referring to the cohesiveness of the team.

But Mohawk's coaches feel that the team can reach the level of play needed to be competitive by the year's end.

"When we have fun, when we play together as a unit we see the results," said White.

Mohawk was also scheduled to travel to play the Fanshawe Falcons on Sept. 25, but the doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather. No makeup date has been announced.

Next on the schedule is a doubleheader in Oshawa versus the Durham Lords on Sept. 28, with game one set for 6 p.m. and game two at 8 p.m.
