The Seneca College Sting made their trip to the CCAA National
Championship in Edmonton, Alberta with hopes of improving on their
previous trip to the big show that saw the ladies from North York
finish fifth.
In the opening round game, the Sting turned in a winning
performance, upsetting the fourth ranked UBC-Okanagan 77-66.
Rookie, Katie Weiss, paced the Sting with 15 points, while Carlene
Siopis kept pace with 14 points of her own, hitting several clutch
free throws down the stretch. Natasha Thombs and Alana Vicks also
hit double digits on the score board netting 12 and 11 points
respectively. Vicks was simply dominant on the backboards, reeling
in a game high 11 boards. Second year player, Ashley Docking,
showed no signs of opening round nerves, adding 8 points to a
complete game performance that garnered her Player of the Game
honours.
With the Sting in a positive frame of mind, they were then pitted
against the top ranked Vanier College in the Semi-Final. The Sting
played the Cheetahs tough throughout the game, but the Sting were
simply out matched in the end as the top seed downed the Sting
73-60 to advance to the gold medal game where the Cheetah’s
eventually captured the National title. Carlene Siopis was
impressive in the game, posting 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists
enroute to being named the Player of the Game.
Down, but not out, the Sting mounted a rally in the Bronze Medal
Semi-Final against the Lethbridge Kodiaks. Looking to All-Canadian,
Natasha Thombs, for leadership the third year player did not
disappoint, banking 12 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the
game. But, the effort was for not, as the Seneca Sting had their
tournament run ended with the heartbreaking loss 77-69 to the
consistent Kodiaks team. Thombs was name the Player of the Game for
her performance and was eventually named, for the second
consecutive year, a CCAA National Championship Second Team
Tournament All-star.
Congratulations Seneca on an impressive 2006-07 season.
