ST. CLAIR 59, MOHAWK 40

WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair women's basketball team celebrated their home opener in style and improved their record to 2-1 on the season with a 59-40 victory over Mohawk College tonight in a near capacity crowd at the campus gym.

A poor shooting night for both teams made for some interesting action around the basket but Mohawk could not sustain a run in the game as St. Clair managed to hit more shots as the game wore on.

St. Clair led 29-13 at half time and was able to use its bench as all 12 Saints dressed saw time in the game.

St. Clair limited Mohawk to just 22.4 per cent shooting for the game and only gave up two three-balls leading comfortably throughout the game.

Fourth-year guard Jaide Lyons had 10 of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter and was the only Saint in double figures.

Fifth-year guard Kelly Rizea (Windsor, Ont./Vincent Massey) had four assists to go with her eight points. Mohawk's Natalie Fisher had 12 points in a losing cause.

The St. Clair women's basketball team will host Redeemer University College (Ancaster) Saturday at the campus gym with tip time at 1 p.m.

WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair Saints scored a pair of OCAA basketball victories over the Mohawk Mountaineers in Windsor Friday (Nov. 1).

The home town Saints downed the Mountaineers 79-74 in the men's game, to improve to 2-1 while Mohawk saw its record go to 1-1.

Andrew Cicuttini led Mohawk with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Fennell scored 17 points and had five rebounds while Xzennis Brereton had 13 points and five boards.

The key statistic in the game was from outside the arc, as St. Clair had 15 three-pointers from 31 attempts, while the Mountaineers were a dismal 1-for-18.

The Mountaineers move on to Sarnia Saturday where they have a 5 p.m. meeting with the Lambton Lions, who improved to 1-2 by beating Redeemer 75-64 Friday.

Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker said his team expected a tough road test against a good team like St. Clair and that's what they got. He expects the same from a good Lambton team Saturday.

The Mohawk women were beaten 59-40 at St. Clair. Natalie Fisher had 12 points, while the Browne sisters, Careena and Carissa, each scored seven points.

"We got off to a poor start offensively and just couldn't get into a rhythm," said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. "We shot poorly from the floor and free throw line and that cost us. Defensively, I thought we played decent enough to win, but just couldn't get into transition to get easy baskets."

The Mountaineer women will meet Lambton in Sarnia Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Lions are 0-3 after losing 75-58 to Redeemer Friday.
