TORONTO - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA)
proudly recognizes Humber College women's volleyball
student-athlete Kelly Nyhof as its 2013-14 OCAA
female athlete of the year.
Named the OCAA women's volleyball player of the year for the third
consecutive season, the OCAA West Division scoring champion led all
OCAA players averaging 4.9 points per set. Nyhof totaled 274 points
on 200 kills, 42 blocks and 32 aces for a Humber team that won the
OCAA West regional crown with an unblemished 18-0 record for a
third straight season. She was also named an OCAA West Division
first-team all-star.
Following her impressive regular season, Nyhof went on to lead
Humber to a seventh consecutive OCAA championship. She was named
MVP at the championship, accumulating 56 kills, eight service aces
and six blocks for 70 points in three matches, all four-set
victories.
"Having coached in the OCAA for several years, it's rare that you
get to coach an athlete as special as Kelly," says Humber women's
volleyball head coach Chris Wilkins. "Her
willingness to learn and get better, her care for teammates makes
Kelly the person she is today."
"She is a gifted athlete and an even better person. I can honestly
say she has been a dream to coach and one of the finest people to
have ever come through the Humber women's volleyball program."
Nationally, the Georgetown, Ont., native was named the Canadian
Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's volleyball player of
the year as well as an all-Canadian. Scholastically, she received
SIRC-CCAA academic all-Canadian and OCAA all-academic awards based
on her achievements in Humber's office administration - law firm
profile program. She is also a member of Volleyball Canada's
national program.
"Kelly is an exceptional athlete and student who's epitomizes the
very best qualities of an OCAA student-athlete," praises Humber
athletic director Ray Chateau. "We are proud of
her accomplishments at Humber and look forward to following her
progress on our national team."
Overall in her five seasons in the OCAA, Nyhof is a five-time
provincial champion making appearances at five consecutive national
championships; a three-time CCAA all-Canadian; a three-time OCAA
championship MVP; five-time OCAA first-team all-star; two-time OCAA
West Division scoring champion; one-time OCAA championship
all-star; and a one-time OCAA West Division rookie of the year
(2009-10). Nyhof is second all-time in several all-time OCAA
statistical categories, including 1,186 points, 873 kills and 198
blocks.
Nyhof becomes the fifth consecutive student-athlete from Humber to
be awarded OCAA female athlete of the year. She joins former
teammate Landis Doyle (2010-11) as the only two
women's volleyball players from Humber to earn the award.
Nyhof will formally be presented her OCAA athlete of the year
award later this month. The OCAA male athlete of the year will be
announced on Wednesday. A complete list of OCAA all-academics will
be released Thursday.
