Seneca Stings Centennial, Stays atop Standings

Scarborough, ON — After a quick 25-14 first set victory for the Centennial Colts, the Seneca Sting dominated three consecutive sets (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) to continue their win streak on Wednesday night at the Athletic and Wellness Centre.

Jess Garcia and Ara Telan worked in tandem for the Sting (14-1) to set up strong offensive kills and block mighty Centennial (8-7) attacks on defence. Apart from their mistakes in the first set, the Sting dominated the match with numerous service aces.

The Colts had good rhythm as they started the match with three consecutive unreturned attacks. Even with two timeouts late in the first set, the Sting couldn't settle into their usual commanding routine. Centennial took the set 25-14.

The Colts did a good job of maintaining poise and capitalizing on Sting mistakes at the start; however, they would not continue this performance into the other sets.

In the second set, the Sting proved deserving of their nine-game win streak. Seneca set up a strong defensive presence on the left side to stop solid Colt advances, and Colt hitters CL Viloria and Jaque Ronquillo—who usually are relied heavily on their power—had to get creative.

Viloria read the Sting's defensive setup well in the second and third sets, and tallied points by intentionally placing tips just over the net. Even so, the Sting responded well to these efforts and kept ahead throughout the next two sets, winning them 25-14 and 25-20.

In the final set, the Sting extended their pressure, crushing Centennial's early three point lead. Although Centennial used strategic timeouts and solid communication in an attempt to regain control this set, their efforts were unsuccessful, and Seneca took the fourth set 25-20, just like the last.

With the win, the Sting remain atop the rankings and the Colts' record fell 8-7. This game was only Centennial's second loss at home this season.

The Colts will play their next game on Saturday at George Brown College.
