Sting Focused to Start Season

The Seneca Sting opened the 2016-2017 campaign with a three-set sweep over the George Brown Huskies.

With first year coach Shane Christopher at the helm, the Sting started slow, falling behind 3-0 to the Huskies in the opening set. An error by the Huskies allowed the Sting to steal the momentum, scoring four straight points. The back-and-forth battle continued for the entire opening set. Down 24-21, the Sting scored four straight points to take the lead, eventually winning the set 27-25.

The second set saw a sluggish start from the Sting as they fell behind 4-0. The Sting chipped away at the Huskies' lead before taking command at the midway point and rolling to a 25-13 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

With the roles reversed in the third set, the Sting jumped out to a 9-2 lead, eventually building a 14-5 lead before the Huskies started their comeback. Up 23-16, the Huskies scored four straight points before the Sting closed out the match 25-20.

Nicole Boyd led the Sting with 12 kills along with 4 digs. Lauren Watt had 7 kills and a team-high 4 aces. Amy Sayaveth added 6 kills and 10 digs. Genevieve Potovszky had a match-high 26 assists along with 3 aces and 6 digs. Victoria Wensley and Crystalyn O'Donnell each added 13 digs.

Tiana Samuels topped the Huskies with 4 kills and 9 digs. Audrey Chau and Julia Vit each added 2 kills and 4 digs apiece. Gabrielle Mitton had 9 assists along with 2 aces and Angelique Agustin Pao Ming Lee each added 5 digs.
