Sting Dominate Bruins

Sting Dominate Bruins

The Seneca Sting made a statement to the rest of the OCAA that they were gunning for a spot in a fourth consecutive OCAA Championship following a 5-0 win over the previously unbeaten Sheridan Bruins.

Mother Nature made for difficult playing conditions as rain throughout the day left the field soft and slippery.

With the inability for deep cuts, scoring chances were at a premium in the match's opening minutes.

Haley Pozzo had an opportunity to open the scoring in the 16th minute, but her point-blank shot from just inside the eighteen yard box was thwarted by goalkeeper Savanna Wood.

The Sting generated a scoring chance in the 28th minute when Jamie Smith streaked down the right side of the pitch. Smith sent a crossing attempt to Andrea Runco, but Runco's sliding effort caught the outside of the goal.

In the 39th minute, the Sting finally broke through. Pozzo took a pass and struck a shot with her left foot which curled into the bottom left corner of the net to open the scoring.

Moments later, Chantalle Ward gave the Sting a 2-0 lead. A crossing pass from the right side of the goal eluded three members of each team, only to find the foot of Ward who was streaking in from the far side of the goal.

As the rain picked up to open the second half, Chantal Cifuentes added to the Sting lead. Cifuentes, taking a free kick from nearly thirty yards out, placed a perfect shot which dropped just below the crossbar into the back of the net.

Nicole Berardi added to the lead in the 65th minute. Amber Reesor, who came in to play goal for the Bruins at halftime, failed to control a high ball and Berardi quickly attacked the net to net the loose ball.

Andrea Runco completed the scoring for the Sting in the 76th minute.

Sarah-Anisha Van Wart Bradbury recorded the shutout for the Sting.

With the win, the Sting moved to 2-0-2 on the season while the Bruins fell to 2-1-2.
