Sitting at the Top

The Seneca Sting continued their winning ways tonight, earning a four set win over the Centennial Colts in Seneca's Newnham Gym.

The first set saw the two teams exchange momentum throughout the set. The Sting opened up a 9-3 lead before the Colts tied up the set at 17. The Sting would score six of the next seven points to take a 23-19 lead before closing out the set 25-20.

The Colts jumped out early in the second set, taking a 12-5 lead before evening the match with a 25-19 win.

The Sting played like the top team in the OCAA East Division in the third set, taking a two sets to one lead thanks to a convincing 25-18 set win.

The fourth set was a roller coaster ride for both teams as the teams exchanged leads. Trailing 17-16, the Sting tied the match before back-to-back aces by David Lazarev gave the Sting a lead they would not relinquish, taking the final set 25-22.

Sidney Wilding (Oshawa) led the Sting with 12 kills and 9 digs. David Lazarev (Maple) added 11 kills, 3 aces and a team-leading 11 digs. Toms Gaikis (Cesis, Latvia) had 8 kills, 4 aces and 7 digs and Jorell Miller (Scarborough) recorded 38 assists. Ishmael Kotey (Mississauga) had a match-high 6 blocks.

Ethan Peter led the Colts with 13 kills and 5 digs. Andrew Joseph and Justin Smith each had 7 kills. Calvin Yu led the team with 35 assists and 16 digs. Nathanial Monteron added 14 digs.

The Sting (13-2) are back in action next Friday when they travel to play Fleming (11-4) at 8:00pm while the Colts (4-12) host Trent (11-4) Wednesday at 6:00pm.
