Colts Drop Hard Fought Battle to Sting

Colts Drop Hard Fought Battle to Sting

Scarborough, ON — The Seneca Sting claim victory over the Centennial Colts in front of extremely passionate fans after three close sets (26-24, 25-22, 25-23) at the Athletic and Wellness Centre.

Even a strong Centennial defensive presence, with numerous blocks from Colts Pablo Alvarez and Nikolas Moser, was not enough in a match riddled with errors on both ends. The game came down to which team made the smallest number of mistakes as countless points were lost to bad ball reads and service errors.

The first set started out close, but the Colts soon pulled away to lead by four points and make it 20-16. A strong Colt defence with key blocks from Alvarez and Moser, built Centennial's lead, but errors from the service line soon surrendered it.

With only a few points left in the first set, Seneca mounted an intense response to tie the game 24-24. Two small Centennial mistakes later, the Sting would finish their comeback and take the set 26-24.

In the second set, both teams would continue to blunder on the court and the first few points on either side were earned from faulty serves. The Colts then put up a four-point lead, which they quickly lost, as the Sting closed the gap to one point making the score 10-9.

For the next 10 points, both teams would stay within one of each other in a long drawn-out battle. Late in the set, the Sting finally carved out a lead going up 22-20. Even though the Colts would call two timeouts and bring it back within one point, they didn't secure the set, and Seneca took their second of the night 25-22.

The third set followed the pace of the first two as energy in the gym ramped up and both teams struggled to build a dominant lead. The play got scrappy as players on both teams sacrificed their bodies for point after point.

In the end, however, Seneca had the stamina and claimed their third straight set 25-23 to win the game.

With the loss, the Colts' record drops 12-3. Centennial will take on their next challenge this Saturday when they travel to George Brown College.
