GEORGIAN COLLEGE SET TO HOST BADMINTON EAST REGIONAL

Many of Ontario’s finest collegiate badminton players will be competing at Georgian College in Barrie, ON from February 3-4 at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton East Regional Championships.

The East Regional Championships is a two-day event featuring athletes from Collège Borèal, Cambrian College, Georgian College, George Brown College, Fleming College (Lindsay), St. Lawrence College (Brockville), St.Lawrence College (Cornwall) and St.Lawrence College (Kingston). Players will compete in four events including: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The top three teams from each event will advance to the OCAA Badminton Championships, hosted by Seneca College from February 17-18, 2006.

The Cambrian Golden Shield has been a badminton powerhouse in the OCAA winning the past eleven straight overall team championships and the 2006 edition of the team looks solid to continue their winning ways. Cambrian’s Kathryn Bobbie has recorded an excellent start to the season and will be vying for the women’s singles title.

The host, Georgian will be looking to challenge with John Paynter, who was victorious in men’s doubles and mixed doubles ‘A’ division at the Centennial Invitational tournament. Last year John earned the OCAA silver medal and CCAA bronze medal in men’s doubles with partner James Didiodato. The doubles pair have earned a slew of title’s together but will be looking to lead the Grizzlies squad to their first east regional title.

Results from the east regional championship will be posted on the OCAA website at www.ocaa.com. For more information on the OCAA Badminton East Regional Championships, please contact Michele McConney at the Georgian College Athletics Department at (705) 728-1968 X: 5283.
