Top badminton players gathered from across the country to
participate in the 2006 CCAA Badminton Championships hosted by
Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta. The athletes representing
the OCAA fought hard all week as they earned four individual bronze
medals.
2004-05 OCAA Male Athlete of the Year Nathaniel Allard of the
Centennial Colts (Scarborough) earned his second podium finish in
as many years winning the bronze medal in the men’s singles
competition. In a tight bronze medal match up, Allard edged out his
opponent from Red Deer 2-1 (15-10, 12-15, 15-12). Ryan Rows of
Cambrian College (Sudbury) also earned his second medal at the
Nationals as he partnered up with Kathryn Bobbie to earn the bronze
in mixed doubles with a 2-0 (15-5, 15-6) win over a squad from New
Brunswick.
In women’s singles, OCAA gold medallist Margaret Myjak of the
Mohawk Mountaineers (Hamilton) had a very good showing by winning
the bronze medal. In her bronze medal match, Myjak found herself
down early dropping the first set. Determined to bring home the
medal, Myjak stormed to take the next two sets to win the game by
the score of 2-1 (9-11, 13-11, 11-3).
In men’s doubles, the team of John Paynter and James
Didiadato from the Georgian Grizzlies (Barrie) had a strong showing
winning the bronze. Paynter and Didiadato rallied to defeat the
team from Edmonton 2-1 (6-15, 15-12, 15-7).
Unbeaten in all five categories, the BCCAA team swept through the
tournament to take the Team Championship Banner.
The OCAA would like to congratulate all OCAA member college
competitors on their strong showing at the CCAA National Badminton
Championships.
