REGIONALS COMPLETE - BRING ON THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

After two days of badminton action, the field has been set for the OCAA Championships to be hosted by Centennial College (February 17-18). Cambrian College (Sudbury) played host to the East Regional Badminton Championships while Humber College hosted the West Region Championships. The top three winners in each region advance to the OCAA Championships.

Out West, the Seneca Sting won another West Region crown as they took home the titles in Women’s Doubles (Amily Lau & Emily Ko) and Mixed Doubles (David Trinh & Erica Lord). Defending OCAA Champions Nathanial Allard (Fanshawe) and Margaret Myjak (Mohawk) looked on top of their game as they both finished first in their respective divisions. Hao Ly & Ronny Islam of Humber College used their home court to their advantage as they won the Men’s Doubles competition.

The Cambrian Golden Shield managed to regain their crown of East Region champions after losing it for the first time in 13 years last season to the Georgian Grizzlies. In the singles competition it was veteran John Paynter of Geogian College controlling the court while Jody Carruthers of Cambrian college won on the women’s side. Meanwhile, representatives from Cambrian won both the doubles competitions as Adam Thompson & Dwayne Wilson won in men’s while Samantha Sheppard & Merne Laplante won in women’s. Rounding out the action in the East saw Ryan Vandenburg & Becky Ehret of the St. Lawrence Vikings take home the Mixed Doubles crown.
