Top badminton players gathered from across the country to
participate in the 2007 CCAA Badminton Championships hosted by
Douglas College in New Westminster, British Columbia. The athletes
representing the OCAA fought hard all week, with Jody Carruthers
picking up lone medal in the women’s singles competition for
Team Ontario.
Cambrian College’s Jody Carruthers took home the only medal
of the Championship for team Ontario as she finished in third place
in the women’s singles competition. After finishing with a
2-2 record in round robin play, Carruthers was defeated in a close
semi-final match to Laura Fong of the ACAC by a score of 2-0
(23-21, 21-18). Carruthers was on target in the bronze medal final
as she swept Grace Whang of the BCCAA 2-0 (21-7, 21-8).
Nathaniel Allard of Fanshawe College was shutout at the National
Championship after suffering a 2-0 loss to Quinn Conway of the ACAC
in the bronze medal final. Allard seemed to have trouble finding
his groove all week after going 1-3 in round robin play. Allard has
had a history of success at the National level picking up a silver
medal in 2005 and a bronze in 2006.
Representatives in the doubles competitions were also in tough all
week as all three teams failed to qualify for the medal round.
Making their first appearance at the National level, Hao Ly and
Roni Islam of Humber College finished with an 0-4 round robin
record. Despite not being able to pick up a win, the duo from
Humber were competitive in every match, dropping two games in three
sets.
In women’s doubles, Falcon teammates Jayme Sky and Jenn
Hayman put in a strong effort, taking two of their four matches to
three sets. Despite their strong play and determined effort, Sky
and Hayman were unable to string together a complete game going 0-4
in the round robin. Amy Howe and Charlie Lay of St. Clair also
shared the same problem as they too came up empty in the win column
(0-4).
In the team competition, the BCCAA squad emerged as the badminton
powerhouse finishing in first and second place overall. Despite a
hard fought battle throughout the competition, Alberta Colleges
Athletic Conference could not win against the BCCAA and settled for
the bronze medal.
The OCAA would like to congratulate all OCAA member college
competitors on their strong effort at the CCAA National Badminton
Championships.
