Lam Trinh and Michael Kopinak, first year head co coaches of the
Humber College badminton team, were selected as the 2009/10 Ontario
College’s Athletic Association Badminton Coaches of the Year.
The announcement was made on Friday morning at the Awards Banquet
prior to the beginning of the 2010 OCAA Provincial Badminton
Championships, which are being held at St. Clair College in
Windsor.
Lam & Michael have been vital parts of the Humber badminton
program for the past number of years and were since they were put
in the head coach category this year have garnered tremendous
results. The Hawks won the OCAA West Division Overall Team title,
by way of taking first in men’s and second in the
women’s division.
Both coaches have been instrumental in the recruitment and
development of many outstanding players, including the last three
OCAA Male Players of the Year and this year’s Female Player
of the Year.
Lam, a former Humber Hawk player, was an assistant for three years
before taking on the role as Co Head Coach. His technical expertise
has been a valuable tool in the growth of Humber players.
Michael was influential in the reestablishment of the Humber
badminton program in 2006. In the five years he has been with the
program it has grown quickly and now sits as the third ranked
program in the country.
“Both Lam and Michael are been passionately committed to the
badminton program at Humber ,” noted Humber Director of
athletic Doug Fox. “They have laid a strong base that should
bring great success for many years to come”.
With the announcement of the OCAA Coach of the Year honours, both
coaches have been nominated for the CCAA National Coach of the Year
award, which will be unveiled at the 2010 CCAA Badminton
Championships in Edmonton in two weeks.
