CHIU NAMED CCAA MEN'S BADMINTON PLAYER OF THE YEAR

SACKVILLE, N.B. - Tim Chiu is the 2011 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Men’s Badminton Player of the Year. Chiu competes in men’s singles for the George Brown College Huskies in Toronto, Ont.

After earning a silver medal at the 2010 CCAA Championships in his rookie year, Chiu has continued to compete in the CCAA as well as attending Canadian National Championships. He’s currently ranked fourth among men’s singles players in Canada.

“Tim Chiu has shifted gears this season,” said Alf McGuire, CCAA’s national badminton convenor. The 2010 CCAA silver medalist and two-time OCAA gold medalist will return to this year’s finals to compete in the men’s singles events.

In addition to managing his competition schedule, Chiu is a volunteer coach with George Brown’s varsity and community badminton programs. “He’s a natural leader among his peers,” said badminton head coach Kim Ng.

The George Brown Huskies won the Men’s Team and Overall Team Trophies at the 2011 OCAA East regional championships and currently sit in sixth place in the CCAA national rankings.

The other nominees for Men’s Badminton Player of the Year were Justin Barkhouse of Mount Allison University, Matt Chan of Mount Royal University, and Peter Huang of Capilano University.

Chiu received the award Wednesday, March 2 during the CCAA All Canadian banquet at the CCAA Badminton Championship in Sackville, N.B. Player of the Year recipients receive a CCAA customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
