SACKVILLE, N.B. - Tim Chiu is the 2011 Canadian Colleges
Athletic Association Men’s Badminton Player of the Year. Chiu
competes in men’s singles for the George Brown College
Huskies in Toronto, Ont.
After earning a silver medal at the 2010 CCAA Championships in his
rookie year, Chiu has continued to compete in the CCAA as well as
attending Canadian National Championships. He’s currently
ranked fourth among men’s singles players in Canada.
“Tim Chiu has shifted gears this season,” said Alf
McGuire, CCAA’s national badminton convenor. The 2010 CCAA
silver medalist and two-time OCAA gold medalist will return to this
year’s finals to compete in the men’s singles
events.
In addition to managing his competition schedule, Chiu is a
volunteer coach with George Brown’s varsity and community
badminton programs. “He’s a natural leader among his
peers,” said badminton head coach Kim Ng.
The George Brown Huskies won the Men’s Team and Overall Team
Trophies at the 2011 OCAA East regional championships and currently
sit in sixth place in the CCAA national rankings.
The other nominees for Men’s Badminton Player of the Year
were Justin Barkhouse of Mount Allison University, Matt Chan of
Mount Royal University, and Peter Huang of Capilano University.
Chiu received the award Wednesday, March 2 during the CCAA All
Canadian banquet at the CCAA Badminton Championship in Sackville,
N.B. Player of the Year recipients receive a CCAA customized ring
provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA
Championship Awards Banquet.
