IMPRESSIVE PLAY OPENS DAY 1 OF CCAA BADMINTON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Day one is complete at the 2013 CCAA Badminton National Championship with its share of excitement across the board through the first three rounds of play.

Two-time CCAA Male Player of the Year Dan Kai of NAIT sits atop the leaderboard in men's singles play with a perfect 3-0 record. Losing only two sets, Kai put together an impressive day and handed Tim Chiu (Humber College) and Jason Sun (Langara College) their only loses in the first three rounds who sit behind Kai with 2-1 records.

In women's singles play there is a tie on top of the standings with Carol Dela Cerna (Seneca College) and RuiLin Huang (Douglas College) both posting perfect 3-0 records after Day 1. Dela Cerna and Huang will not meet until the fifth and final round robin stage which takes place Friday starting at 12 noon.

Douglas College's Nathan Choi and Wei (Ray) Luo hold the top spot in men's doubles holding the only perfect record in the bracket at 3-0. Jimin Jung and Ian Tang of Seneca College sit in second place with 2-1 record and will have an import match against the Douglas duo in round five.

Another big match-up is setting up in round five Friday afternoon as Tracy Wong and Renee Yip from Humber College and Amy Leung and Charmagne Yeung of Douglas College went perfect on day one with 3-0 records. It was a solid day for the women's doubles team from host Georgian College as Rebecca Trischler and Carolyn Tubman put together a 2-1 record and have themselves in medal contention after three rounds.

In mixed doubles, NAIT's Lei Chen and Jessica Yu looked strong through their first two games but ran into a tough challenge from Langara College's Ashley Jang and Matt Downton. Splitting the first two sets Chen and Yu were able to find a way to pull out the victory to wrap up their perfect day and hold the top spot through day one.

The CCAA Badminton National Championship will resume Friday morning at 9 a.m. with round four. The final set of round robin matches gets underway at 12 p.m. with the semifinals beginning at 4 p.m.

The championship will wrap up Saturday at the Georgian College Athletic Centre in Barrie, Ont. Saturday with the bronze medal games at 10 a.m. followed by the gold medal matches at 1 p.m.
