HUMBER, MOHAWK AND REDEEMER TRIUMPHANT IN OCAA BADMINTON

TORONTO - Student-athletes from Humber, Mohawk and Redeemer earned top marks at the 2014 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton Championships at Humber College in Etobicoke, Ont. 

Owen Kurvitz (Hamilton) of Redeemer University College won the men's singles title, winning all seven matches he competed in. The gold medal is Redeemer's first ever in badminton. Ryan Chow (Mississauga) of Humber was awarded silver, with Alex Duong (Hamilton) of Fanshawe College earning bronze.

Similar to Kurvitz, Cindy Fu (Toronto) of Humber went undefeated to win provincial gold in women's singles. Yan Zhou (China) of Centennial College earn silver, and Valérie Breen (Ottawa) took home bronze. For Breen, it marks her fourth OCAA individual medal.

Mohawk College is home to both gold medal men's and women's doubles teams. The men's team of Adam D'Agostino (Sault Ste. Marie) and Kianoosh Moslemi (Burlington) went undefeated, as did the women's team of Victoria Hall (Brantford) and Kimloung Lim (Cambodia). Mohawk's last badminton doubles title came in mixed doubles back in 1986-87.

Seneca College swept the men's and women's doubles silver medals. Jimin Jung (South Korea) and Tommy Cheung were the men's runner-up, while Carol Dela Cerna (Philippines) and Katie Liu (Richmond, B.C.) placed second among the women. It marks a third OCAA medal for Dela Cerna, and a second for Jung.

Ra Seang (Toronto) and Ian Tang (Toronto) of Humber was awarded bronze in men's doubles, while Suzy Yan (China) and Christina Duong (Kitchener), also of Humber, placed third in women's doubles. Seang, Tang and Yan have won multiple OCAA medals in their collegiate careers.

Finally, Andrew Lau (Markham) and Tracy Wong (Richmond Hill) of Humber went undefeated to win the mixed doubles gold medal. For Wong, it is a fourth consecutive OCAA gold medal, now winning in singles, women's doubles along with mixed. Trevor Neville (Barrie) and Maggie Tremblay (Rossport) of Georgian College returned home with silver medals, while Robyn Bennett (Burlington) and Dan Vanden Boogaard (St. Catharines) of Redeemer were awarded bronze.

Humber swept the team competition, winning both men's and women's team titles.

OCAA gold and silver medalists will now turn their attention to the 2014 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Badminton National Championship, hosted by Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton from Feb. 26-Mar. 1.
