OCAA STUDENT-ATHLETES FOUR TIMES GOLDEN AT BADMINTON NATIONALS

HALIFAX - Student-athletes from the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) are bringing back seven medals, including four gold from the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Badminton National Championship, held in Halifax.

The tournament proved that girl power is alive and well in Ontario, with all four female gold medalists reigning from the OCAA. It also marks the most badminton national gold medals won by the OCAA in one season.

OCAA and CCAA player of the year Olivia Lei (China) of Humber won the women's singles gold medal, going undefeated at nationals. Lei did not lose a set. Humber teammate Cindy Fu (China) also returns home with a national medal, taking bronze.

Seneca's Suzy Yan (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Yan Zhou (China) won gold in women's doubles, winning the final in three sets. Yan and Zhou went undefeated at the tournament. Humber's Christina Duong (Kitchener, Ont.) and Michelle Chow (Markham, Ont.) lost in the bronze medal match.

Humber's mixed team of Tracy Wong (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Adam Dong (China) went undefeated to win gold, not losing a set. Mohawk's Kianoosh Moslemi (Burlington, Ont.) and Victoria Hall (Brantford, Ont.) lost in the bronze medal final.

Two medals came via the all-OCAA men's singles final between two-time provincial champion Owen Kurvits (Hamilton, Ont.) of the Redeemer Royals and silver medalist Jesse Assing (Bethany, Ont.) of the Humber Hawks. Assing went undefeated in the round robin, defeating Kurvits in three sets 21-16, 13-21, 21-11 in a rematch of the OCAA final. These two athletes put on another show in the finale, with Kurvits prevailing 21-10, 9-21, 21-13.

In men's doubles, Ross Golding (Toronto) and Ogyen Dorjee (Toronto) of George Brown return home with silver medals after dropping the final. Humber's Ryan Chow (Mississauga, Ont.) and Darcy Schmidt (Haliburton, Ont.) lost in the bronze medal match.
