HUMBER TAKES BOTH TEAM TITLES AT OCAA BADMINTON WEST REGIONALS

MISSISSAUGA - The Humber Hawks were winners of both men's and women's team titles at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) west badminton regionals hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga.

Eight Hawks will represent Humber at the OCAA Badminton Championships, taking place Feb. 19-20 at Seneca College in North York, Ont. Ryan Chow and Adam Dong were the top men's doubles team at regionals; Jesse Assing and Phuthita Nilyok placed first in mixed doubles; and Olivia Lei was the top women's singles player.

They will be joined by Sandy Chen and Michelle Chow who were runner-up in women's doubles, and Jonathan Young for placing third in men's singles. The top three singles players and doubles teams from each discipline at regionals advance to provincials.

St. Clair is sending a pair of doubles teams to Seneca. Somath Kong and Alaina Lee finished second in mixed doubles, while Dat Dang and Matt Treloar were third in men's doubles.

The Fanshawe Falcons saw three of their athletes advance to provincials. Jodi Grobbecker and Riley Hogan were the top women's doubles team at UTM, while Tilu Vaidya finished third in women's singles.

Redeemer will also send three of its athletes to Seneca, including Owen Kurvits who placed first in men's singles. Fellow Royals Kevin Barkman and Ryan Phan will join Kirvits at the OCAA championships thanks to their second place showing in men's doubles.

UTM saw three Eagles advance to the OCAA championships, including Kristie Fan and Holly Wong for finishing third in women's doubles, and Yue Chen for his second place showing in men's singles.

Conestoga will send a team of three Condors to Seneca, including the mixed doubles team of Alexis Grant and Yizhi Zhang for placing third in mixed doubles, as well as teammate Jessica Murray who was second in women's singles.

A total of 46 student-athletes competed at west regionals.
