BADMINTON NATIONALS DAY 1 RECAP

BIBLE HILL, N.S. - The 2023 CCAA National Badminton Championships hosted by the Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus (DAL AC) began today by welcoming student-athletes from across the nation to the East Coast. Student-Athletes from Alberta and Ontario joined locals from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and Newfoundland in what was a fantastic day of badminton.

Here are the results from Day 1 of competition:

Women's Singles

2023 CCAA Player of the Year Ritu Shah (UKC Blue Devils, ACAA) dominated her matches resulting in a 3-0 record on the day. Her match against the 2021-22 Player of the Year Johnna Rymes (Concordia Thunder, ACAC) was a nail-biter though Ritu gained the upper hand and the win (13-21, 22-20, 21-13). Devika Santhosh Kumar (Conestoga Condors, OCAA) also had a 3-0 record while Johnna Rymes (Concordia Thunder, ACAC) finished 2-1 after her loss to Ritu. Moti Shams (Seneca Sting, OCAA 2) finished today at 1-2 while Whitney Doucette (USTA Dragons, ACAA 2) and Taylor Burton (SAIT Trojans, ACAC 2) are still looking for their first win.

Men's Singles

Thomas Ashton (UKC Blue Devils, ACAA) finished the day 3-0 alongside Colin Zhou (Centennial Colts, OCAA). Vishal Dave (Centennial Colts, OCAA 2) had a 2-1 record after his matches and Narayan Ramdhani, 2023 CCAA Player of the Year, ended the day with one win, one loss and one retirement. Jack Gillies (UKC Blue Devils, ACAA 2) and Anirudh Sharma (NAIT Ooks, ACAC 2) remain in the hunt for a win.

Women's Doubles

Victoria Duong/Airi Moromisato (Humber Hawks, OCAA) along with Abby Ledda/Cecilia Wolski (TKU Eagles, ACAC) dominated the board as both teams ended today with a 3-0 record. Anna Dugandzic/Fiona Purdy (UKC Blue Devils, ACAA) head into tomorrow's matches with a 2-1 record while Amber Solomon/Brianna Warwick (MTA Mounties, ACAA 2) were 1-2. Sylvie Bibeau/Noel Do (NAIT Ooks, ACAC 2) and Morgan Grant/Mook Prasarn (Fanshawe Falcons, OCAA 2) were 0-3.

Men's Doubles

The east coast duo of Aidan Badcock-Parks/Jack Ronahan (UKC Blue Devils, ACAA) maintained a 3-0 record as did Nishant Batra/Sirapob Title (Humber Hawks, OCAA). Kevin Shah/Anthony Tso (Seneca Sting, OCAA 2) earned a 2-0 record while Emmanuel Duguay/Anthony Olson (TKU Eagles, ACAC 2) gained a 1-2 record. Ben Broadbent/Jacob Lamothe (MTA Mounties, ACAA 2) remain the only pair still looking for a win.

Mixed Doubles

Sarthak Arora/Lok Yin Lee (George Brown Huskies, OCAA) and Bryce Mason/Anna Gillies (UKC Blue Devils, ACAA) maintained 3-0 records while Davis Wong/Ivy Ung earned two wins. Ninh Le and Deniese Scott (Centennial Colts, OCAA 2) won one and lost two. Kyle Bauld/Caitlin McCavour (Dal AC RAMS, ACAA 2) and Jonathan Su/Jasleen Kaur (CUE Thunder, ACAC 2) are still without wins.
