ACE IN THE HOLE
St. Clair first-year player Drake Sunderland
(Kingsville, Ont.) is the first OCAA pitcher to throw a no-hitter
this season, stymying the Seneca Sting in a 16-0 victory.
Sunderland was near perfect through five innings, striking out
nine while allowing just one walk. He improved to 2-0, and saw his
ERA drop to an even 2.00.
Saints pitchers are no strangers to no-hitters, with two last
season.
NO STREAKIN' ALLOWED
St. Clair is no longer undefeated.
Durham second-year hurler Ilija Bozinovski (Ajax,
Ont.) pitched a complete game six-hitter in a 3-2 seven-inning
victory that ended St. Clair's 17-game win streak in OCAA regular
and post-season play.
Bozinovski allowed just two earned runs, striking out five while
walking three. Bozinovski is 3-0 this season.
Despite the setback, St. Clair is sitting pretty, with a trip to
the OCAA championship all ready secured. With a record of 12-1, the
Saints will look to clinch top spot in the standings their
remaining seven games.
FIVE ALIVE
With St. Clair's loss, Humber now boasts the league's longest
win streak at five games. All five wins came against George Brown
and Seneca, teams that have combined for one win and 19 losses
between them.
Fifth-year third baseman Sean Mattson
(Scarborough, Ont.) was perfect at the dish in a doubleheader sweep
of George Brown, going 6-for-6 with two doubles. He scored six runs
and stole a pair of bases.
With four games in hand, and two more against St. Clair, the Hawks
can still make a run at the front running Saints.
BATTLE OF TORONTO
Both George Brown and Seneca have had its troubles this season,
losing nine straight games to open the 2014 campaign.
Something had to give on Tuesday when these teams met for the
first time. George Brown prevailed 5-1 for its first win since last
October.
George Brown pitcher Andrew Murrell (Markham,
Ont.) threw a complete-game three-hitter, striking out 10. He
helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run
scored.
George Brown's next three games are against Seneca, giving both
clubs an opportunity to string some wins together and get back into
the playoff chase. Seneca also plays a doubleheader against Humber
before its final two games against George Brown.
