TORONTO - Fanshawe College's Quinton Twohey (London) is the 2016 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Baseball Player of the Year. He received the award in a ceremony held in Toronto on Thursday evening.
The third-year catcher/first baseman was among the OCAA league offensive leaders with 21 hits, 20 RBI, 19 runs, eight stolen bases and a .412 batting average. He had a .588 slugging percentage and .556 on base percentage in 20 games. Twohey is also an OCAA All-Star.
Fanshawe teammate Robert Doyle (London) is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The outfielder/pitcher was one hit shy of 20 with a batting average of .317, scoring eight runs while driving home eight RBI. On the mound, Doyle was 1-1 with a 0.42 ERA in 16 2/3 innings of work, allowing a dozen hits while striking out 18. Doyle is also an OCAA All-Star.
The OCAA Batting Champion is Max Ayarza (Panama) of St. Clair. Ayarza had a batting average of .481, going 25-for-52, seven points better than his closest rival. He is also an OCAA All-Star.
St. Clair's Kyle Breitner (Mississauga) is now the three-time OCAA Pitcher of the Year. Breitner led the OCAA with five wins (with no losses), two complete games, one shutout and 41 strikeouts. His 1.53 ERA was good for third among pitchers. Breitner is also an OCAA All-Star.
Sam Dempster of Durham is the OCAA Coach of the Year. Under Dempster's guidance, the Lords rebounded from an 8-12 record in 2015 to an 11-7 mark this season. With two games lost due to inclement weather, Durham could have added to its total.
Also named OCAA All-Stars were Carlos Arteaga (London) of Fanshawe; Alec Brown (Bowmanville) and Michael Chilvers (Sutton West) of Durham; Curtis Cobean (Port Elgin) and Andrew Murrell (Pickering) of George Brown; Brandon Costa (Toronto) of Humber; Travis Helps (Mooretown) of Fanshawe; and Jeffrey Watkin (Tecumseh) of St. Clair.
