DURHAM, ST. CLAIR 2-0 AFTER DAY 1 OF NATIONALS

DURHAM, ST. CLAIR 2-0 AFTER DAY 1 OF NATIONALS

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham Lords and St. Clair Saints are perfect with two wins on Day 1 of the inaugural National College Baseball Championship.

The three-day event hosted by Durham kicked off Friday morning after Thursday's games were rained out. Day two action will begin at 10 a.m. at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium with the Lords/Saints leading off Day 2.

Fanshawe and Holland each went 1-1 on day one while John Abbott and Humber dropped both of their games. With four teams advancing to Sunday's semifinals, all six teams have a chance at advancing with one game each remaining in the round robin.

Durham opened the day off with a 2-0 shutout over Humber followed by a 4-1 victory over Holland.

Pitching was the key to Durham's success as starters Shaun Slemko (Courtice, Ont.) and Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) were both named players of the game. Alec Brown (Bowmanville) relieved Harkness in the sixth inning and was able to get out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the Lords three-run lead.

The four-time OCAA champion St. Clair Saints went 2-0 with wins over Fanshawe (10-2) and John Abbott (10-0).

A highlight of the day included Holland throwing a combined five-inning no-hitter against the John Abbott Islanders in the opening game of the championship. Brady Arsenault and Porter Smith combined to strike out 10 hitters in the Hurricanes 17-0 win over the Islanders.
