ST. CLAIR CLAIMS FIFTH CONSECUTIVE GOLD MEDAL WITH 1-0 WIN OVER HUMBER

TECUMSEH, Ont. - St. Clair College (Windsor) defeated Humber College (Etobicoke) 1-0 in the gold medal game at the OCAA Men's Baseball Championship presented by belairdirect being held at Lacasse Park in Tecumseh, Ont., Saturday afternoon. With the win the Saints remain the only OCAA champion in men's baseball and claim their fifth consecutive gold medal.

St. Clair needed just a lone run which came in the fourth inning when Austin Oulds (Chatham) stole home after a dropped third strike that needed a throw to first base. Oulds timed it well on that throw and raced home using a wide slide that evaded the return relay to score in dramatic fashion. Saints starting pitcher Seth Chauvin (Tecumseh/L'Essor) put together a sterling performance with a complete game three-hitter that featured four strikeouts and only two walks.

Chauvin worked out of jam in the fourth inning stranding runners on second and third with a pair of strikeouts that ended the threat. Humber put a runner on base with plans to tie the game in the seventh inning but a nice play on a sinking liner in left field by Garik Godard (Belle River) meant the Saints were just one out from a celebration. A pass ball moved that tying run to second base but a ground ball to shortstop Kevin Dion (Newmarket) allowed the Saints to collect in the middle of the field to enjoy their championship in front of the home fans.

Chauvin was named Player of the Game for St. Clair due to his efforts on the mound in a contest that proved to be a true pitcher's duel. Humber's starting pitcher Rory Pollard (Brampton) was unrewarded with a victory but threw a four-hitter while striking out seven batters over six innings that garnered Player of the Game honours for this team.

Saints first baseman Michael McKay (Miramichi, N.B.) was named the Championship MVP with centerfielder Carson Burke (Tecumseh/St. Anne) and Kevin Dion taking a spot on the All-Star Team also. Humber's Steven Hough (Toronto) and Justin Marra (Toronto) along with Fanshawe's Carlos Arteaga (London) were the remaining members of the Championship All-Star team.

Fanshawe earned a bronze medal by virtue of a 7-6 loss to Humber which also served as a back door qualifier for the gold medal round in the double-knockout format. Fanshawe had control of that game with 6-0 lead in the second inning but Humber chipped away culminating with a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
