The Confederation Thunderhawks (Thunder Bay) and Seneca Sting
(North York) captured provincial banners this past weekend at the
2006 OCAA Curling Championships at the Welland Curling Club, hosted
by Niagara College. Confederation successfully defended their
women’s title going 5-0. Meanwhile the Sting picked up gold
in the men’s competition after going 6-3.
The Seneca men went 5-2 in round robin action and defeated Fleming
(Peterborough) in a close 7-6 final victory to win the
Championship. For the Seneca men, it was their first OCAA title
since 1998-99. The medal podium saw Seneca take gold, Fleming, P
won the silver and Fleming (Lindsay) finished with a bronze. The
championship is Seneca’s fifth overall men’s title. The
golden squad was made up of Mike Barfield (lead), Tyler McDermott
(second), Sean Harrison (vice), Chris Van Huyse (skip), Craig
Glassford (spare) and Brian Moffatt coached the team.
The Confederation women’s team thundered through round robin
action going 4-0. The championship final was a repeat of last
year’s as the Thunderhawks defeated Fleming, P 6-4 for the
title. Fleming finished second and Mohawk (Hamilton) won third. The
win hands Confederation their twelfth overall women’s title.
The team included Christina Simperl (lead), Lisa Auld (second),
Alissa Begin (vice), Ashley Miharija (skip) as Ron Fearon and
Walter Risi coached the team.
At the close of the weekend’s competition several teams were
awarded for their first-class performance representing their
colleges. Congratulation’s goes out to:
St. Clair – Men’s Fair Play Award
Niagara – Women’s Fair Play Award
Confederation – Mixed Fair Play Award
