St. Clair College is set to rock this weekend as they host the
2008 OCAA Curling Championships. Nine Ontario teams will be vie for
the OCAA Championship title in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed
competition.
The Seneca Sting and Fleming Knights are both coming off banner
years after claiming provincial titles in 2007. Seneca will look to
defend their provincial championship title, keep their hopes of a
three-peat alive with another successful defense of their
Men’s title after going 5-0 record at the championship a year
ago.
After securing the college’s first curling gold medal in
school history, Fleming Peterborough’s women will also look
to defend their title from a year ago. The team from Peterborough
rolled through round robin action going 3-0, averaging 9.6 PPG in
the opening round a year ago, before defeating the Algoma
Thunderbirds 7-3 to earn their first curling championship
title.
Notably missing at the championship will be the third winners from
a year ago, Algonquin College. After going a perfect 5-0 to capture
gold in the mixed division, the College has chosen to take a new
direction in their athletic program and the team will not be
returning to defend their title.
Curlers from Thunder Bay will be making sure good weather is on
their wish list to the jolly man in the red suit. With plans of
circling the competition instead of Toronto’s Pearson
International Airport, the Thunderhawks hope to return to curling
action and reclaim their championship title they were unable to
defend last year. Poor weather made it impossible for the team from
Thunder Bay to land and subsequently forced them to return to
Thunder Bay.
Algoma, Fleming Lindsay, Mohawk, Niagara, Sault and St. Clair will
also be participating in the 2008 edition of OCAA Curling.
