OCAA CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP KICKING OFF

The 2009 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Curling Championships are ready to roll at the Glendale Curling Club in Hamilton, Ontario. Hosted by Mohawk College, the event will take place from February 19-22. Nine colleges will participate in the event, representing three disciplines in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Team events.

Traditionally a powerhouse in men’s curling, the Confederation Thunderhawks men will once again return to the championship, this time in search of their sixth OCAA title since the 2001 season. Looking to dethrone the defending champs will be the host Mohawk Mountaineers. The team from Hamilton left an impression with a victory in the Hap Holman Invitational earlier this season at the Glendale Curling Club, but will meet several teams in this tournament for just the first time this season.

On the women’s side, the Fleming Peterborough Knights will look to complete the Championship trifecta after finally breaking Confederations strangle hold on the women’s curling ranks. The Thunderhawks had won eight of the past 12 championship titles with Algonquin College and the Seneca Sting being the only other teams to earn titles during the era. Niagara College will also be a serious challenger after claiming their division at the Hap Holman earlier this season.

In the Mixed Curling events the St. Clair Saints have asserted themselves as the team to chase, capturing the 2009 Hap Holman title. Looking to defend their OCAA Championship title will be the host Mohawk team who fell 13-3 to the Saints on their home ice earlier this year, but with the motivation of a Provincial Championship on the line, turning the tables this weekend might just be on the plate.
